True story.

I personally have felt an emotional trauma that a patient had to go through in a hospital when she was told that it’s not her turn to see the doctor in the consulting room. This woman had to cry for help but the nurses refused to show just compassion to her. Those of us who were on the call wait to see the doctor even pleaded on her behalf to let her go and see the doctor first but the nurses around insisted that it isn’t done because the last time they allowed that, some of the patients taunted them and labelled them as being partial. As time progressed, the anguished patient fainted. We later saw that she had died already.

Many of us who witnessed the scene felt sad and some were compelled to cry including the nurses.

My question is, what makes humans to be humane or being humanitarian? Let’s look at the definition of these two words and conclude if the attitudes of the nurses and some people we live with depicts the act of being humane or acting as a humanitarian.

A humane person is one who shows great compassion and care for others, and who tries whenever possible to alleviate another’s suffering. The sad part is that,a person can be human without being humane. Therefore the human conditions are the characteristics that we portray to others, the situations which compose the essentials of human existence, such as birth, our growth, emotionality, our aspirations, conflicts, and mortality.

Sometimes in life we look at our position, rank or status in life before we can think about being humane to someone, but we forget that not only wealth will put smile on others faces but it is an inspiration just to wish someone well in life when in their worst situation can be an act of being humane as the definition says.We can be kind in all aspects in life. Our tone of talking to others will show the respect we have for them, the least words you say to a wounded heart can be healed without money. Showing love and compassion to others especially the needy ones can make them feel secured and see themselves as fellow humans. The extent to which we are humane can be measured by the action it prompts.

To this end, we should take the initiative to put ourselves in other’s shoes, paws, hooves or claws, so we can help them as we would want to be helped.

Rihanna, American singer and a humanitarian, explored how to be seen as a humanitarian in her speech at Harvard University on their graduation. She said “I know that each and everyone of you has the opportunity to help someone else ,all you need to do is to help one person expecting nothing in return,to me that’s humanitarian. You don’t have to be rich to be a humanitarian ,you don’t have to be famous to be one,but it starts with your neighbour the person next to you,you don’t even have to be college educated, you just do whatever you can to help in any way that you can and today,

I want to challenge each and everyone of you to make a commitment to help one person, one organization one situation that touches your heart. My grandmother always used to say that if you get a dollar there’s plenty to share”. I think we can take something out of what she said and we would all put a smile on someone’s face and would be seen as being humane.Let’s look at these quotes to inspire us and act as humane.

1. Life’s ‘ most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’

2. If you can’t feed a hundred people, feed just one.

3.Whatever you do will be insignificant, but it is very important that you do it.

4.Overcoming poverty is not a task of charity, it is an act of justice.
